Welcome to the Edgefield Tube Amplifier Company

The Edgefield Tube Amplifier Company is a sole proprietorship company specializing in custom built, hand-wired tube guitar amplifiers based on some of your favorite amps from the 1950s and '60s.

If I deviate from a classic circuit at all, it is only to improve safety, extend tube life, reduce noise, or perhaps to add an adjustable bias.

While I specialize in classic fender tweed and black-face circuits, I have moved forward into design built projects to the customer specifications, such as the new Signature Model "Jim Mings Jazz Classic," pictured to the right. I have also done a number of restorations on vintage Ampeg and old Gibson amps.

Restoration & Repairs

Yes, I also do restorations and repair work. I have very little interest in doing radical modifications that would destroy the collector value of your vintage amp, but you may contact me with your needs, and we can talk about it.

As you might guess, repairs might be as simple as a couple of new tubes and setting the BIAS. However, if your transformers are damaged or your speakers are blown up, parts can get pretty expensive.

NOTE: I prefer to provide repairs and restorations FOR FOLKS CLOSE ENOUGH TO DRIVE over, drop their amps off, and pick them up when ready. However, if money is no object...... :) Seriously, most of you probably have access to qualified techs without having to ship your amp back and forth. Lot's cheaper.

This is one of my latest projects. It is a custom, hand built replica of a circa 1968 50 Watt Plexi. There's a link at the bottom of the page for more info.

Having played electric guitars for over 40 years, the company founder, Joe Stertz, understands that this is not about our amplifiers.

This is all about you the players being able to coax that illusive sound and tone out of your rig, to match what you are hearing inside your head.

Joe's brothers John and Jim are shown here jamming on the back porch of "The Farm," here in Edgefield County South Carolina, where our amps are built.
Here you see inside the chassis of an ETAC 5E3 Tweed Deluxe Tribute.

I chose a premium grade cabinet from Mojo Music Supply in North Carolina for this project. Its 3/4" finger-jointed pine cab is covered in genuine tweed fabric. This one features an eye-catching custom antique amber finish. You can see the amber finish a little better a couple of pages over on 'Catalog.'

The circuit board is hand wired, and tube filament wiring & grounding are improved, plus there is liberal use of mil-spec shielded teflon cable to help with noise reduction.

My philosophy? I will not ship an amp that I don't wish I could keep here!
